WATERCOLOR PORTFOLIO
“Watercolor is the language of immediacy”
Over the years I have been exploring and chronicling the Berkshires and surrounding region - woods, fields, lakes, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean - recording my findings of the often-subtle beauty of the landscape in watercolor, tempera and gouache paintings. All my watercolor paintings are done on archival paper such as Arches or Saunders, 140# minimum.
Long intrigued by Asian sumi-e painting (black ink and water only) I try, on occasion, to find the same intimacy with this ancient technique. For more information about painting sizes and prices, click on the ‘Info’ tab in the upper right-hand corner of this site.
My larger paintings - INTERSECTION: WATER & LAND - are created with these same media, based on the pleine-aire watercolors. To see some of these paintings, click on the ‘Select Works’ tab on the upper righthand corner of this site.
It should be noted that from time to time I also record my many travels across the United States not with a camera, but with watercolors.

Art in America
Garret Henry on Stephen Gerard Dietemann’s artwork:
“(Dietemann’s) choice of subject is compelling, while the fluency of his handling of a difficult … medium and the buoyant beauty of his strokes are both superb. The artist … has described his pursuit of art as “learning to see.” In this respect he is very learned indeed”
